Ask Questions
What kind of questions should you ask? All kinds. Ask how points are accumulated at your level (nickels, quarters, dollars, etc.) and which games (slots, video poker, video keno, video blackjack). Many clubs do not include nickel play and a few don't count quarters. Several clubs award more points for slots than they do for video poker and even video keno. Ask if the club awards cash or prizes. If it's cash, ascertain how many points are needed to win $1 and the minimum number of points required to redeem for cash. If it requires 10 hours of play and you're leaving town tonight, you might have a problem. If prizes and comps are the main awards, ask to see a prize schedule. Though you don't have to evaluate this information completely before you sign up, you should definitely work through it before you begin serious play. Some slot clubs, such as those run by Mandalay Bay Resorts and the Mirage, are forthcoming with information; their personnel take as much time as necessary to answer all your questions. At the other extreme are the "don't ask, won't tell" clubs, that would have you believe there is no way for them to determine what the point schemes are or how many points you need to get a free meal or reduced room rate. Don't believe this for a second! They could tell you if they wanted to. Thankfully, these relics are facing extinction and you can support this movement by refusing to play at the ones that insist on a "don't ask, won't tell" stance. Someday, somewhere, you may find yourself in a casino that doesn't have a slot club. It may be the Indian casino closest to your home or an older Nevada casino that has special blackjack or crap rules, your favorite restaurant, and your spouse's favorite sports book. Don't despair. Almost every casino and even just bars with video poker machines, have devised some method to reward their players. The best way to find out is to ask a slot host or supervisor. |
