In the past 10 years, legal gaming, in one form or another, has mushroomed in the United States.

Today, There are only three states (Hawaii, Tennesse and Utah) that have no gaming of any form.

Following is a breakdown of the forms of gaming in the U.S.

  • Commercial Casinos -- 11 states
  • Native American (Indian) Casinos -- 19 states
  • Horse Racing, Dog Racing or Jai Alai -- 41 states
  • Charitable Gaming (Bingo, Raffles etc.) -- 46 states
  • State Lotteries ­ 37 states

    Following are the states with some form of Casino Gaming

  • Land-based Casinos -- 6 states:
       CO, LA*, MI, NV, NJ, SD.

  • Riverboats (or dockside casinos) 6 states:
       IL, IN, IA, LA, MS, MO

  • Tribal Class III Casinos -- 19 states:
       AZ, CO, CT, IA, KS, LA, MI, MN, MS, MT, NE, NV, NY, NM, NC, ND, OR, SD, WI

  • Slots/Video Gaming at Parimutuel Facilities -- 6 states:
       DE, IA, LA, NM, RI, WV

    No Casinos (no commercial or Class III Tribal Casinos open)24 states:
       AL*** AK*** AR, CA*** FL*** MD, MA*** NH, OH, OK*** PA, SC, TN, TX*** UT, VT, WA***, WY***

    * Commercial Casinos legalized, but not yet open.

    *** States with recognized Indian gaming tribes, but without legal Class III Indian casinos open.
